Printed Electronics Board Game

The board game “beer garden“ was established by students from the FH in Vienna and the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. They worked in cooperation to complement each other for a sucessful implementation of an interactive game. The value of working togehter in two different countries got visible by the chosen topic. The design of the game shows the cultural difference and a combination of them.

Printed electronics is a fascinating field of printing technology because it combines interdisciplinary expertise. Stable processes are very difficult to achieve in reality. Only in a highly developed industry electrical printed circuit boards can be routinely printed. This is due to the extremely high susceptibility of these processes to faults caused by various environmental stresses.

The project work was splitted into two parts. The students in Vienna were responsible for the software the game needs to function. The group in Muinch was bigger and could be seperated into two teams – the technic and the design team. The tech team was responsible for the complete implementation of the technical components and thus the design, the pressure of the conductor tracks and the placement of the LEDs, capacitors and resistors. The goal was to implement a functional game with printed electronics. The design team was responsible for designing the visual interface and packaging the game. The tasks therefore consisted of design, printing, lasering and further processing. The goal was to implement a meaningful design with regard to functionality and attractiveness. These teams need to work closely together to guarantee the functions. On top of that a project manager was necessary for communication, especially with the team in Vienna.

 

With the help of a program via the open-source microcontroller “Arduino”, the LEDs can be placed on the circuit board sheet and should accept different colors in response to user input, following a game principle. The communication of the user with the game should work over touch surfaces. The project was appealing to the students, as well through a planned visit to the other city between the students from Munich and Vienna. In addition to the joint work on the project, the time in the cities could be used for a cultural program.
